FALL PET FESTIVITIES

 

Is your pet ready for all the area festivities this fall?

• Saturday, October 18: Check out the 2014 Top Dog Show at Sarasota Memorial Auditorium from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The area’s premier dog lovers event features a Westminster-like dog show where owners can enter their four-legged friends in playful categories including: Best Dressed, Best Hair, Best Catch and Fetch, Best Kiss and Funniest Dog Trick. Enjoy fine dining with your canine companions or chill out in one of the Donte’s Den lounges onsite. Volunteers will be on hand to care for and walk dogs while owners and their friends enjoy the show. Admission is $125. Donations will help support Donte’s Den, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. • Wednesday, October 29: The Humane Society of Sarasota County hosts its 17th Annual Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume Contest where pets of all shapes and sizes dressed in their favorite “Howl-O-Ween” costumes are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for categories such as Cutest Costume, Funniest Costume, Spookiest Costume, Most Creative Costume and Best Dog/Owner Look-Alike Costume. Registration will take place the day of the contest from 10:30-11:45 a.m., and the Pet Costume Contest begins at noon. Dr. Heidi Ward, owner of Gulfcoast Veterinary, is the title sponsor of the pet costume contest in honor of her beloved dog, Shaney Man. Entry fee is a $10 donation per pet, with all proceeds benefitting the Humane Society of Sarasota County. The “howlingly” fun pet costume contest takes place at the Phillippi Estates Park Farmers’ Market, Phillippi Estate Park, 5500 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. • Sunday, October 26, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.: Mark your calendars for Woof-O-Ween! Moonracer No Kill Animal Rescue presents a howling good time for the whole family. The fun begins with a scrumptious waffle breakfast served at Jeanne’s Bistro and Coffee, 417 12th St. W., Bradenton. The celebration includes a variety of activities: Carnival games, face-painting, nail trimming for dogs by Peggy Duffy, fall-themed pet photos. Woof-O-Ween will conclude with a costumed pet parade. Prizes will be awarded for funniest, scariest, most original, most environmentally friendly, cutest and looks most like their owner. One grand prize-winner will be awarded by a panel of judges. Entertainment will be provided by musical talent David Smash. Dining with pets will be allowed on the outside patio. Dogs must be leashed using a standard lead, as retractable leashes can cause hazards for others. • Saturday, November 1: Bring your pet in costume for the Howlin’ Halloween Pet Parade at Blalock Park on the 200 block of South Nassau Street in Venice. The event takes place from 9-noon.
