Steer Clear of Turtle Nests at the Beach

Last week’s blog discussed sea turtle nesting season. This week we are expanding upon that post because according to the North Port Sun, five turtle nests on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County were destroyed by an ATV that was driven over roped-off turtle nests and shorebird nesting areas late in the evening of June 27. Five nests containing sea turtle eggs were destroyed; two black skimmer chicks were killed and another injured.

Many volunteers patrol our coastline daily, monitoring sea turtle activity and cordoning off turtle nests. This is a felony offense. Regular beachgoers are advised to steer clear of turtle nests. Give them room! Respect our wildlife. It’s something that makes this area special.
